Stage description:
After a night at the mountain hut, the Hallerangerhaus, start on trail 223 heading south through the so-called “Durchschlag” and up to the Lafatscher Joch (2081 m). This section is also part of the popular long-distance “Eagle Walk” hiking trail. It is a steady climb between Lafatscher, Rosskopf and Speckkarspitze until you leave the Joch, heading east on trail 222. Keep on the somewhat up and down path till you reach the mountain hut known as the “eagle’s nest” of the Karwendel mountains, the Bettelwurfhütte. After some refreshment at the hut, those with stamina, a good level of fitness and the necessary technical equipment can opt to climb the Grosser Bettelwurf peak. The route is well-signposted and heads first eastwards to where the trail comes up from the Hall valley and then continues uphill in a south-eastwardly direction to the “Eisengattergrat”, the southern ridge of the Grosser Bettelwurf mountain. From there, the trail heads north and steadily upwards along the Eisengattergrat towards the summit. You will come to a rocky outcrop with the first of some wire-rope-secured passages and the section thereafter is partly-secured and partly easy climbing (I) on good-grip limestone. This leads to the summit ridge, mostly on the right of a diagonally-descending gully, and includes some partly exposed rock ledges. Via ferrata equipment, including a helmet, is strongly recommended. The path becomes steeper towards the top and splits shortly below the summit ridge and the left path, as seen from below, is easier to climb. Keep east at the summit ridge and you will reach the summit cross via a narrower ridge section that is exposed on both sides. Return via the same route to the Bettelwurfhütte where you can meet up with other mountain enthusiasts who have chosen to relax and unwind there. Overnight at the Bettelwurfhütte.
Key points on this stage
To give you a better idea of the difficulty of the route and the demands on climbers, you will find a picture gallery with images of the key sections here. Particularly in poor visibility and in the presence of old snowfields, it is important to maintain maximum concentration or it may not be possible to climb the route.
Good to know:
The trail through the blasted clearing from the Hallerangerhaus to the Lafatscher Joch is a typical mule track. This leads between the Lafatscher Roßkopf, the Kleiner Lafatscher and the Speckkarspitze mountains, thus connecting the Halleranger to the Halltal valley and the Hallerangerhaus to the Bettelwurfhütte.

Karwendel High Trail
Further stages
On a total of six stages, Karwendel mountain enthusiasts – or those who would like to become one – get to know the Karwendel mountains in all their different facets. Mountain pine fields alternate with the typical Karwendel gravel cirques. Your gaze wanders between the barren gray of the Karwendel scree and the densely populated Inn Valley.
Stage 6: Scharnitz - Hallerangerhaus
The Karwendel Höhenweg starts in Scharnitz in the Länd, where the gateway to the Karwendel mountains is located. On the first day, the trail leads us through the Hinterautal valley along the turquoise-blue Isar river and finally to the wonderfully situated Hallerangerhaus.
Stage 4: Bettelwurfhütte - Pfeishütte
The fourth stage of the Karwendel High Trail leads from the Bettelwurfhütte over the Stempeljoch. The starting point is the Bettelwurfhütte hut perched spectacularly at the foot of the Kleiner Bettelwurf and the destination is the rustic Pfeishütte hut.
Stage 3: Pfeishütte - Solsteinhaus
There is a lot of hiking on this day: In around nine hours, you cover a distance of 16.5 kilometers on the way from the Pfeishütte to the Solsteinhaus.
Stage 2: Solsteinhaus - Nördlinger Hütte
You start at an altitude of 2239 meters at the Nördlinger Hütte. Follow the hiking trail to the Solsteinhaus via the original saddle and the Eppzirler Scharte.
Stage 1: Nördlinger Hütte - Reith
On the last stage, we start at the Nördlinger Hütte and reach the train station in Reith bei Seefeld in around three hours. We can travel home comfortably by train.
